American Bottles and Flasks book by Helen McKearin and Kenneth M. Wilson. Crown Publishers, pages. 11 ¼ x 8 ¾" Out of print. Over illustrations. The classic reference for collectors of early bottles and flasks. Section II - the figural flask charts, is the section where flasks are organized, numbered and identified in line drawings by groups (see photos).   For more information on the western whiskey flask refer to his book, Whiskey Bottles of the Old West. Another important read is Spirits Bottles of the Old West by Bill and Betty Wilson. Collectors often specialize in just western flasks and being rarer than the fifth, putting together a large collection can be quite a feat. The Prince Cantacuzène Collection of Early American Bottles and Flasks Dear Flask Collectors, As a result of doing some research, I found the the Auction Catalog for the Prince Cantacuzene Flask Collection. If you Google him, you’ll notice he fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution coming to America and dying in in Sarasota. Usually embossed on the base, marks may also appear on the lower heel area on certain types of bottles, especially sodas. On earlier flasks, fruit jars, and soda bottles, and especially examples produced in the mid-nineteenth century period (ss), the full factory name or initials may be embossed across the front.

The interest in historical flasks and bottles, and others of various colors and designs, is so widespread, that it has prompted me to compile this check list; Brief mention is made of the early bottle makers, as this is outside the scope of the book.
